Yokohama Harbor View Park (Minato-no-mieru Oka Koen)

The Yokohama harbor view park is located on a hill overlooking the port of Yokohama. The parc features a pretty rose garden and an observation deck with a great view of the industrial port of Yokohama where ships are loaded with commercial goods. The Yokohama bay bridge is also seen in the distance.

Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery

Yohohama’s foreign general cemetery has an history that dates back to 1853 when Commodore Perry first arrived in Japan. The death of a crewman aboard Perrys’ ship prompted the Japanese government to create a foreign cemetery at Perrys’ request. The cemetery was originally part of the Zotokuin temple. As the presence of foreigners in Japan grew, the demand for burial grounds increased as well so that the Japanese tombs and the temple itself were relocated somewhere else in Yokohama. Nowadays, the cemetery can be visited for a small donation amount. It may not be to everyone’s taste but I enjoyed learning about the very first Gaijins of Japan who must have had to overcome far greater challenges than today’s Gaijins to adapt to the culture of their new country.

Yokohama Ferris Wheel – Cosmo Clock 21

A large ferris wheel, named Cosmo Clock 21,  is located in the Minatomirai district, close to major attractions like the Landmark tower and the Akarenga. The wheel is especially noticeable at night thanks to the bright colorful lights installed on the wheel’s structure. The view of Yokohama it offers at the climax of the ride is amazing. Some special cabins have a transparent floor for a more thrilling experience. I suffer from vertigo so the regular cabin proved to be thrilling enough for me!

Yamate Italian Garden

The Yamate Italian Garden is located on a hill which was known before as the Italian mountain since it was the location of the Italian consulate. Nowadays, the park features a beautiful Italian-style garden and two western-style historical houses that were restored to their original state. These houses used to belong to dignitaries and wealthy foreigners during the Meiji and Showa eras.

Hikawa Maru

The Hikawa Maru is a Japanese ocean liner that was launched in 1929 and was used to transport goods and passengers from Japan to the United-States. Among the many illustrious passengers who stayed on the Hikawa Maru was Charlie Chaplin, who sailed on the Hikawa Maru for his trip around the world. During wartime, the Hikawa Maru was converted into a Hospital ship and in 1953 she was reconverted as a luxurious ocean liner. She finally retired to become a museum in Yokohama in 1961.

Osanbashi Pier

The Osanbashi Pier is the main international passenger cruise ship terminal of Yokohama. The design of the pier is modern and integrates organic elements like grass and wooden planks. Its structure is reminiscent of waves in the water. The top of the pier is a public space which offers an unbeatable view of Yokohama and the Minatomirai skyline. It is in my opinion the best place to take breathtaking photos of Yokohama during daytime, nighttime and the amazing sunsets in between. You can bring some snacks and your favorite drinks for a picnic with an unbeatable scenery.
