O-Hanami at Matsushiro Castle (まつしろ じょうし)

The city of Matsushiro is located close to Nagano. It is well known for the extensive network of caves that were dug under the mountains during world war two to house the imperial family as well as the army leaders, although its construction was never finished since Japan surrendered before completion. I went O-hanami with the Yamamoto family at Matsushiro Castle, which today consists only of the reconstruction of the outer wall of the castle. For the o-hanami season, the front of the castle was lit by hundreds of lanterns adding a lot to the nightly charm of the location.
