Visiting Nikko (日光市)

This short clip first shows some scenes of the trip from Tokyo to Niko on the Tobu Nikko line. It then explores the surroundings of the Nikko Tobu station and moves on to the most popular historical monuments of Nikko, the Nikko Tosho-gu temple, the Futarasan shrine and the Taiyu-in mausoleum. After a hot day, nothing is better than a Kakigori, those iced-shaving Japanese desserts!

Nikko’s Tobu Station area

The Nikko Tobu station area is a lovely place with several shops but more importantly, it is where you can take various buses that will bring you to the Toshogu Shrine, Chuzenji lake and more… While you are there, why not also rent a yukata or a kimono?

Sumida river in the morning. (Sumida-gawa,隅田川)

If you stay over the Taito/Asakusa area, take advantage of your jet-lag and go on this bridge very early in the morning. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves. Note that Asahi building and Tokyo tower are visible on some images!

Gion in the evening

The Gion district is one of the best places to see Geisha and Maiko. On this particular visit, I did not see any Geisha on the street so I made my way to the Yasaka Shrine. This area of Kyoto is well known for its nightlife with restaurants and Izakayas.

Kappa Bashi

On our way to Ueno Park, we walked on Kappa Bashi (Kappa Street) where many Kappas are usually seen. Kappas are mystical creature of Japanese folklore. They are small reptilian-looking creatures with an humanoid form. They usually inhabit ponds and rivers of Japan, but can sometimes be seen in Tokyo on Kappa Bashi! They usually have a shell or carapace on their back similar to turtles. They have also have what we could name a “plate” on top of their head, which they have to keep wet when they venture out of the river.
